Mark is a native of Sampson County where he graduated from Clinton High School in 1992. Mark went on to attend North Carolina State University where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and he graduated with a B.A. in History in 1996. Mark graduated from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2000 with honors where he served as a member of both the Moot Court Board and Mock Trial Board.
Mark began his career as an attorney by serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Sampson County, North Carolina. He served in that role for approximately one and a half years. Upon leaving the D.A.'s Office, Mark joined the regional law firm, White & Allen, P.A., where he practiced alongside some of the best attorneys in the State. Mark became a partner with White & Allen and his practice focused on general civil litigation and criminal defense in both State and Federal courts.
After practicing with White & Allen, Mark accepted an opportunity to once again serve the citizens of North Carolina by becoming an Assistant District Attorney with the Lenoir County District Attorney's Office. Mark served in this role for nine years and served as a serious felony and homicide prosecutor prior to leaving in 2024.
Mark has since returned to private practice where he works alongside his friends and colleagues Nicholas E. Harvey, Sr. and Mary Helen Johnston. Although not a partnership, these three share an office located at 807 North Queen Street in Kinston and thoroughly enjoy each other's experience, assistance, and comradery.
Mark has been very active in various professional organizations as an attorney. Mark is currently a member of the Lenoir County Bar Association (past secretary/treasurer and president), the Ninth Judicial District Bar (past vice-president and president), and the North Carolina Bar Association (past leadership position with the Young Lawyer's Division and Criminal Practice Section). Mark is a former member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (formerly the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers) where he actively participated with the Criminal Practice Section.
Early in Mark's practice, he was approved by then Chief United States District Court Judge Louise W. Flanagan to become an active member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel of Attorneys to represent indigent defendants in all Federal Courts within the Eastern District of North Carolina.
Mark has been recognized for his work in criminal defense by being nominated and recognized as one of the "Top 100 Trial Lawyers in North Carolina" and he has been recognized several times in the annual private magazine publication, "Super Lawyers".
However, without a doubt, the greatest highlight of Mark's professional service thus far came when he was elected by his colleagues in Wayne, Lenoir, and Greene Counties to serve as the Ninth District's North Carolina State Bar Councilor.
